Chihuahua Rescue & Transport
WHAT IS CRT?
CRT
stands for Chihuahua Rescue Transport, a network of volunteers developed
originally, from the CHIHUAHUA-L email list and friends who had a passion to
rescue and save Chihuahuas, and to provide veterinary care i.e; vaccinations, heartworm and fecal testing, h/w treatments, spay and neuter, who might not otherwise find a caring
foster/adoptive home.
WHEN IS CRT UTILIZED?
When
someone knows of a Chihuahua facing death, abandonment, or abuse, that person is
responsible for sending a message to their Regional Coordinator where,
hopefully, a new foster/adoptive home will be found. Chihuahuas must be legally
and ethically available for adoption and voluntarily relinquished for adoption
by the person or organization having ownership or legal custody. An Owner
Surrender form will be required if this is how the dog is being surrendered.
Each potential adopter will fill
out an adoption application, via the website. A potential adopter may also
request information about a particular dog listed on the website. This is
usually to the Regional Coordinator coordinating that particular state or area.
Adopters
will pay an adoption fee which may vary in different regions (the
general fee is $200 but is higher in some regions) to CRT to help offset expenses incurred
such as spaying/neutering,
vaccinations, heart worm test and preventative, fecal test and any other necessary medical
care such as, but not limited to, dental work, heartworm treatment, etc.. It
is mandatory that all dogs be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, heartworm and
fecal tested and on heart worm
preventative before going to an adoptive home.
The
adoption fee and the adoption contract must be mailed immediately, to the
Regional Coordinator for the particular rescue.
THE VOLUNTEERS
In
order to reduce the risk involved with handing over a dog to a stranger, only
approved volunteers are members of CRT. They must fill out a Volunteer
Application, to be sent to a Regional Coordinator. That coordinator checks all
references provided and arranges for a home visit, if possible. When the
Volunteer has been approved, a signed Code of Ethics must be on file before the
Volunteer will be able to foster, or transport.
WHO TO CONTACT
Initial
inquiries from people looking for a Chihuahua, and messages about Chihuahuas
needing homes, shall be sent to the Regional Coordinator for that area. This information can be
found by visiting the CRT website: http://www.chihuahua-rescue.org.
This is also true for those wanting to become approved Volunteers. You
will find the appropriate links on our Table of Contents.
All rescues must be pre-approved before being taken into CRT's program. If one hears of a Chihuahua in need, contact must be made with the Regional Coordinator for approval. At that time, we will find out if the Chihuahua is in a kill shelter. Those who are in no kill shelters and not in fear of being euthanized, will not be taken in to CRT's program. We only rescue abandoned Chihuahuas and Chihuahuas that are in fear of being euthanized, at our discretion.
